I finished “How to Sell a Haunted House” by Grady Hendrix. I enjoyed it, and it held my attention until the end. But at 40%, I wondered how there could still be 250 pages left. That said, it was fast-paced. I looked forward to learning what happens next for the siblings, Louise and Mark.
Their rivalry drew me in at first. Each had quirks and redeeming qualities that emerged as the story progressed. At times, though, like the GEICO commercial parody of chainsaw/slasher horror movies, you wonder why the characters are oblivious to the foreshadowing of what’s causing their problems. The fights between the two show how blind they are to the clues laid out before them. On the other hand, you can tell where they’re headed about a third of the way through the book. Grady added a number of twists and turns to get you there. So you never really know who to trust.
I didn’t like the ending, though. I couldn’t tell you how to improve it. I just found it unsatisfying. I still would recommend reading it. I like how Grady develops his characters.
As far as the dramatized audio version, I didn’t find it over the top. Most of the story focuses on the two main characters, and having different actors in those roles made it easier to tell who was speaking.
This is my first ever book review. I’m sure it shows it.
